About This Event

People with visual impairments or reading difficulties have only a small fraction of books available to them in audio. Volunteers record assigned chapters of books, which go into an accessible audio library used by schools and organisations working with visually impaired readers.

Impact: A growing library of audiobooks that people with visual impairments or reading difficulties can take in by ear.

Outcome:

  • Volunteers record assigned book chapters as clear audio files.
  • New audiobook chapters added to an accessible audio library.

What volunteering here involves

Your role

You are the narrator for an assigned chapter or set of pages. You record it clearly in your own time after the session and submit the audio file by the agreed date.

Time commitment: 60 minutes live, plus 45 to 90 minutes of recording afterwards.

What you'll be doing

  1. 1Join the 60-minute session, where the host explains who the recordings are for and plays a short sample of a good recording.
  2. 2Learn the recording standards: pace, clarity, how to read headings and page numbers, what to do if you stumble (pause and re-read the sentence, no need to restart).
  3. 3Do a 30-second test recording during the session and get feedback on sound and pace.
  4. 4Receive your assigned chapter or pages and the submission link and deadline.
  5. 5After the session, record your assignment in a quiet room, listen back, and re-record any sections with background noise.
  6. 6Upload the finished file in the format the host specifies, named as instructed so it can be catalogued.

What to expect

  • The live session is 60 minutes. The recording itself takes most volunteers 45 to 90 minutes, done afterwards in one or two sittings.
  • You read at a natural, slightly slower than conversational pace. No acting or voices are needed; clarity matters more than performance.
  • Recordings are checked before they go into the library, and you may be asked to redo a short section.
  • The submission date is confirmed in the session, usually within two weeks.
  • Join from a quiet place with your camera on, and log in five minutes early to test your audio.

What you'll need

  • A quiet room where you will not be interrupted, with soft furnishings if possible (they reduce echo)
  • A phone or laptop with a decent microphone; wired earphones with a mic work well
  • Come prepared by testing a one-minute recording at home beforehand and listening back for echo or background hum
  • About 45 to 90 minutes after the session to complete the recording before the deadline
