Record Audio Poems
Accessible spoken-word content is scarce, so people who read with difficulty miss out on poetry and the outreach it supports.
About This Event
Poetry is one of the first things lost to people who cannot read print easily. Volunteers record assigned poems, which go into an accessible audio library used for outreach, classroom listening and people with visual impairments or reading difficulties.
Impact: A growing library of recorded poems for outreach, storytelling and accessible learning.
Outcome:
- Volunteers record assigned poems as clear audio files.
- New recorded poems added to an accessible audio library.

What volunteering here involves
Your role
You are the voice for an assigned set of poems. You record them clearly and with feeling in your own time after the session, and submit the audio by the agreed date.
Time commitment: 60 minutes live, plus 20 to 40 minutes of recording afterwards.
What you'll be doing
- 1Join the 60-minute session, where the host explains who the recordings are for and plays a sample.
- 2Learn how to read poetry for listeners: pausing at line breaks, keeping a steady pace, reading the title and poet's name first.
- 3Do a short test recording in the session and get feedback.
- 4Receive your assigned poems (in English or another language you are comfortable reading aloud, as the host confirms), and the submission link and deadline.
- 5Record them afterwards in a quiet room, listen back, and redo any with noise or stumbles.
- 6Upload each poem as a separate file, named as instructed.
What to expect
- The live session is 60 minutes; recording usually takes 20 to 40 minutes afterwards.
- Read with natural feeling but no need to perform; clarity and steady pace matter most.
- Recordings are checked before they are published, and you may be asked to redo one.
- If you are comfortable reading poetry in Hindi or another Indian language, say so; recordings in several languages are valuable.
- Join from a quiet place with your camera on, and log in five minutes early to test your audio.
What you'll need
- A quiet room with little echo, and a phone or laptop with a decent microphone (wired earphones with a mic work well)
- Come prepared by recording a one-minute test at home and listening back for background noise
- Optionally, one poem you love and would like to record, in addition to your assignment
- About 20 to 40 minutes after the session for the recording
