About This Event

Community groups and young people have important messages on climate, education and women's empowerment, but rarely the skills or support to turn them into content that travels online. In this lab, mixed teams of volunteers and beneficiaries co-create one ready-to-use piece of digital awareness content each.

Impact: Ready-to-use digital awareness content on social issues, and beneficiaries who know how to make more.

Outcome:

  • Mixed teams of volunteers and beneficiaries co-create digital awareness content on a social issue.
  • Each volunteer-beneficiary team produces one ready-to-use digital asset.

What volunteering here involves

Your role

You are a teammate, not the lead. The beneficiaries bring the message and the lived experience; you bring digital know-how and help the team turn it into one finished asset.

Time commitment: 60 minutes, live. About 15 minutes to prepare beforehand.

What you'll be doing

  1. 1Join the host briefing, meet your team of three to five, and choose one issue together: climate, education, women's empowerment, or another the team cares about.
  2. 2Agree the message: who the content is for, the one thing it should make them think or do, and the key fact or story behind it.
  3. 3Pick the format together: a social media post, a three-to-five-slide carousel, or a poster.
  4. 4Build it in Canva as a team: you handle the tool, they lead on words and images, and everyone reviews.
  5. 5Check it for accuracy, readability on a phone and a clear call to action.
  6. 6Present your team's asset to the whole group in the final ten minutes.

What to expect

  • Teams mix volunteers and beneficiaries; the beneficiaries decide the message. The host confirms the beneficiaries' age range and language before the session.
  • You will finish one real asset per team, which the NGO may publish on its channels.
  • Keep it simple: a clear message and a strong image beat a crowded design.
  • Join from a quiet place with your camera on, and log in five minutes early to test your audio.
  • Children or young people take part, so the safeguarding rules apply: keep your camera on and stay in the group room the facilitator sets up; do not take screenshots, photos or recordings; do not share or ask for phone numbers, social media handles or other personal contact details; and flag anything that worries you to the facilitator, who is present throughout.

What you'll need

  • A laptop with a stable connection and a free Canva account (log in before the session)
  • Come prepared with one cause you care about and one fact or statistic on it from a reliable source
  • Two or three examples of social media awareness posts you think work well, to share with your team as inspiration
