Create Science Content for Underprivileged Children
Children in under-resourced schools often learn science without pictures, models or simple explanations, which makes it abstract and hard to enjoy.
About This Event
In many under-resourced schools, science is taught from the textbook alone, with no pictures, models or experiments, so it stays abstract. Marking World Science Day, volunteers create simple, visual science material - one-page explainers, worksheets and posters (IEC material) - that teachers can print and use in class.
Impact: Simple, engaging science material and IEC content that teachers can use to make science easier to grasp.
Outcome:
- Volunteers create science explainers, worksheets and IEC material for children.
- Ready-to-use science learning material and IEC content for children, created to mark World Science Day.

What volunteering here involves
Your role
You are a content creator. You take one science topic and turn it into one printable piece that a child can understand and a teacher can use.
Time commitment: 60 minutes, live. About 15 minutes to pick a topic and gather references beforehand.
What you'll be doing
- 1Join the host briefing: who the material is for (class level and language), how it will be used, and what makes good material for children.
- 2Pick a topic from the list, such as the water cycle, magnets, plants and photosynthesis, the solar system, states of matter or simple machines.
- 3Create one piece on a template: a one-page explainer with a diagram, a worksheet with three or four simple questions, or a poster.
- 4Keep it simple: short sentences, one idea per section, a clear picture, and an everyday example the child will recognise (for example, why a steel spoon feels cold).
- 5Share your draft with your breakout group for quick feedback and improve it.
- 6Submit the finished file in the format the host specifies.
What to expect
- You work in small breakout groups, with a facilitator reviewing drafts.
- Templates are provided, so you do not need design experience. The focus is on clear explanation, not polish.
- Material is checked for accuracy and level before it goes to schools.
- The host confirms the class level and language (often English and Hindi versions are useful).
- Join from a quiet place with your camera on, and log in five minutes early to test your audio.
What you'll need
- A laptop with a stable connection, and a free Canva account or Google Slides
- Come prepared with one science topic you understand well and could explain to a ten-year-old, plus two or three reference images or diagrams for it
- One everyday example or simple at-home experiment that illustrates the topic
