About This Event

Career Connect is an open, one-on-one conversation between you and a young person aged 16 to 20. It is not a formal presentation. You help them explore possibilities, gain practical insights and identify possible next steps.

Impact: Each young person leaves with greater clarity, more confidence, a few possible career pathways and a practical next step.

Outcome:

  • Volunteers hold a 45-minute one-on-one career conversation with a young person aged 16 to 20.
  • Each beneficiary identifies possible career pathways and one practical next step.

What volunteering here involves

Your role

You are a guide for one young person. You listen, ask questions and share your own experience, and you help them think through their interests, options and next steps without telling them which career to choose.

Time commitment: 60 minutes, live. Preparation beforehand: the form and the reading sent to you.

What you'll be doing

  1. 1Before the session, fill in the short form on your professional background, so you can be paired with a suitable young person in advance.
  2. 2Read the discussion pointers and career resources sent to you before the session.
  3. 3Join the welcome (5 minutes) and a three-minute orientation. There is no icebreaker.
  4. 4Spend 45 minutes one-on-one with your beneficiary. Let them lead: ask about their interests, strengths and questions, and share relevant parts of your own career journey.
  5. 5Talk through whichever areas are relevant: understanding themselves, exploring career options, education and skill building, career readiness (CV, interviews, workplace etiquette), first steps such as internships and mentorship, and real-world insights from your own path.
  6. 6Help them towards practical next steps, without prescribing a single career path.
  7. 7Stay for attendance and brief feedback at the end, and say if your beneficiary needs further support.

How the session runs

  1. 0-5 minWelcome and introductionWhat Career Connect is for and the intended outcome. No icebreaker.
  2. 5-8 minVolunteer orientationThree minutes at most, covering only what you need to begin.
  3. 8-53 minOne-on-one career conversationThe core of the session: 45 minutes with your beneficiary.
  4. 53-58 minFeedback and attendanceAttendance, brief feedback, and a check on whether anyone needs further support.
  5. 58-60 minThank you and closing

What to expect

  • One-on-one: you are paired with one young person aged 16 to 20 before the session.
  • The conversation is led by the beneficiary. Keep it supportive, respectful and non-judgemental.
  • The aim is that they leave with greater clarity, more confidence, possible career pathways and a practical next step.
  • The organising team is available throughout for technical, joining and pairing support.
  • Join from a quiet place with your camera on, and log in five minutes early to test your audio.
  • Children or young people take part, so the safeguarding rules apply: keep your camera on and stay in the room the organising team sets up; do not take your own screenshots, photos or recordings; do not share or ask for phone numbers, social media handles or other personal contact details; and flag anything that worries you to the organising team, who are available throughout.

What you'll need

  • A laptop with camera, microphone and a stable connection
  • The pre-session form completed, so your pairing can be arranged
  • The discussion pointers and resources read beforehand: all preparation happens before the session
  • A short account of your own career path that you are ready to share: what you learned along the way and the challenges you faced

What RAAH provides

  • The young people taking part, each paired with a volunteer in advance
  • From the organising team: the objective and format, discussion pointers and career resources, sent before the session
  • Guidance on running a supportive, interactive conversation
  • Technical, joining and pairing support during the session

How it runs

  1. Before the session: receive the content and guidelines, review the material, and get paired with your beneficiary
  2. During the session: welcome, 3-minute orientation, one-on-one conversation, feedback and attendance, closing
  3. Core principle: prepare beforehand, interact during the session
