Be a Storyteller (Interactive Session)
A story told live, with questions and conversation, lets children aged 7 to 10 listen, think, take part and take away something meaningful, rather than only hear it read.
About This Event
You bring a story of your choice and bring it alive for children aged 7 to 10, through narration, questions and conversation. The intention is not simply to narrate a story, but to experience it together and discuss what it teaches.
Impact: Every child listens, thinks, participates, shares and takes away one meaningful learning from the story.
Outcome:
- Volunteers tell a story in English to children aged 7 to 10 and lead the discussion about it.
- Each child shares one thing they will remember from the story.

What volunteering here involves
Your role
You are the storyteller. You tell one story in English, draw the children into it with questions, hear what they think, and help them find its lesson themselves.
Time commitment: 60 minutes, live. Time beforehand to choose, read and prepare your story and questions.
What you'll be doing
- 1Before the session, choose a story in English suitable for children aged 7 to 10: simple to follow, with a clear moral or learning, and room for discussion.
- 2Read it in advance, prepare a few simple questions, and plan your timing so storytelling and discussion fit within 45 minutes.
- 3Join the welcome (5 minutes) and a three-minute orientation. There is no preparation time during the session.
- 4Introduce the story with an opening question, then tell it with expression, pausing so the children can respond or predict what happens next.
- 5Ask questions that make them think, hear their favourite moments and views on the characters, and ask "What do you think we can learn from this story?" before you summarise.
- 6Close by asking each child to share one thing they will remember, then stay for attendance and feedback.
How the session runs
- 0-5 minWelcome and introductionAn introduction to Be a Storyteller for volunteers and children. No icebreaker.
- 5-8 minOrientationThree minutes at most on session expectations. There is no preparation time during the session.
- 8-53 minStorytelling and discussionThe core of the session: 45 minutes, from introducing the story to each child sharing what they will remember.
- 53-58 minAttendance and feedbackAttendance, brief feedback and key observations.
- 58-60 minThank you and closingThanks to volunteers and children, and a group screenshot, if required.
What to expect
- The children are aged 7 to 10 and the session is in English.
- The 45 minutes run in six steps: introduce, tell, ask questions, hear their perspectives, find the moral together, close.
- It is a conversation, not a classroom lesson: give children time to respond, make sure no child is left out, and avoid correcting or dismissing an opinion unnecessarily.
- The organising team is available throughout for technical and joining support, and may take a group screenshot at the close.
- Join from a quiet place with your camera on, and log in five minutes early to test your audio.
- Children or young people take part, so the safeguarding rules apply: keep your camera on and stay in the room the organising team sets up; do not take your own screenshots, photos or recordings; do not share or ask for phone numbers, social media handles or other personal contact details; and flag anything that worries you to the organising team, who are available throughout.
What you'll need
- A laptop with camera, microphone and a stable connection, tested before you join
- One story in English for children aged 7 to 10, with a clear moral, read through in advance
- A few simple, age-appropriate questions, such as "Which character did you like the most, and why?" or "What would you have done in the character's place?", and one or two points that help children connect the story to their own lives
- Your timing planned so the story and the discussion fit comfortably within 45 minutes
